About Intimate weddings and elopements Croatia — Clive Bevan Phototgraphy

Hello there, I’m Clive. Originally from London, I now live full-time on the beautiful island of Brač in Croatia. My wife Klaudi and I split our time between the island and the Old Town of Dubrovnik, sharing our home with six cats and one very patient dog. If you’re planning an intimate wedding or elopement in Croatia, you already know it’s an amazing place to get married, party and then recover. But I also know, from first-hand experience—that it’s quite the adventure to organise.

Approach

In their own words

Q.How would you describe your photographic style?

A.I specialise in documentary-style photography. My approach is editorial and unobtrusive, focusing on the authentic narrative of the day. You can see how this philosophy translates to the wedding day in my guide on Why Black & White Photography Works for Weddings & Elopements.

Q.What drew you from the UK market to the Dalmatian Coast?

A.Well my wife, Klaudi is originally from Croatia, so that plus the amazing light, landscape and weather were big factors. I’ve detailed the allure of this region in my Complete Guide for UK & US Couples Getting Married in Dalmatia.

Q.What is the significance of your ARPS accreditation for your clients?

A.It provides a guarantee of quality. Being an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society signifies that my documentary work has been peer-reviewed at a high professional level. It’s about ensuring that your wedding is captured with expert consistency.

Q.How do you handle the logistics of remote island elopements?

A.Success on the islands is all about local knowledge and timing. Whether it’s Hvar, Brač or Korčula, I like unhurried coverage so will arrive a day before normally to avoid any ferry mishaps.

Q.What is your philosophy on client interaction during a shoot?

A.I aim to be a calm observer mingling with your guests. By building rapport early, I try to ensure that on the day, the couple feels relaxed enough to forget the camera is even there.

Q.How do you manage the harsh Mediterranean sun during peak July?

A.Timing is key, normal UK wedding times don't work, so I try and guide couples to a 5pm ceremony. That leaves plenty of time for photo's, before the sun sets (which is much earlier here than in the UK in the summer) I discuss this in more detail in my post on the Best Time of Year for a Wedding in Dalmatia, aiming for that perfect transition into twilight.

Q.What is the most important legal advice for UK/US couples?

A.Don't let the paperwork overshadow the celebration. Understanding the timeline is key, It’s about being prepared so you can focus on the day itself. Even when you plan a year ahead, there is still specifically what I call The 90 Day Dash, when you need to get all of your documents re-issued and notarised. However, most people choose to do the legal bit at home first and just have the religious blessing here. I’ve broken down the different styles of these intimate celebrations in my guide to Civil vs Religious vs Symbolic Weddings in Croatia.

Q.Why do you focus specifically on intimate weddings and elopements?

A.There is a beautiful honesty in small weddings. Without the noise of a large production, I can get closer to the real emotions. If you have 10-40 people then I'd love to hear from you; planning a 300 guest extravaganza then I will probably pass.

Q.Which location is currently the "hidden gem" for elopements?

A.There are lots to choose from. Most blogs and guides focus on the well trodden path of the big venues. These are amazing but can feel a little overwhelming for smaller gatherings. There are many smaller venues, from vineyards, the private castles that don't ever get much of a mention.

Q.What advice would you give a couple just starting to plan?

A.Start with the "where & when" then add the "who". It's your day, your memories, you need to do exactly what you want to do and if auntie Ethel can't make it, then you will have some brilliant photos to show her when you get home.
